We're on the radio! Next week on Classical KING FM 98.1 in Seattle, announcer Sean MacLean will feature the following works selected from our upcoming summer program:
Monday, June 29, 8:27 pm—Four Souvenirs for Violin and PianoPaul Schoenfield
Unashamedly intended as entertainment, Four Souvenirs was written for a violinist member of the Cleveland Orchestra. It taps veins of virtuosity and jazzy abandon. The titles 'Samba', 'Tango', 'Tin Pan Alley', 'Square Dance'—confirm that this is music to be enjoyed. It is light-hearted music that befits an opener for a wonderful 10 days of music.
Tuesday, June 30, 8:11 pm—String Quartet No.12 in F, Op.96 “American”Antonin Dvořák
Dvořák wrote this quartet during his stay in America, where he was director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. He spent a summer in the Czech immigrant community of Spillville, Iowa. There is much debate whether this piece contains some native melodies, both from Negro Spirituals as well as from Indian sources, as some critics think,. We do know that Dvořák wrote: "As for my new Symphony, (the "New World"), the F major String Quartet and the Quintet, I should never have written these works 'just so' if I hadn't seen America.
These works, pre-recorded by other artists, will be presented on June 29 and 30 by Northwest Focus, a weekly radio program that showcases the best of the northwest music scene by presenting local concert performances, concert previews, and new releases weekday nights at 8PM. We hope this puts you in the mood for a terrific summer Festival.
